Hyundai launches car with a roof-based solar charging system

Hyundai Motor Company has launched its first-ever car with a solar roof charging system. In an announcement Friday, the business said that the technology would be used on the latest version of its Sonata Hybrid and then introduced to other vehicles over the coming years.

The idea is for the solar roof to support the car’s electric power source, boost fuel efficiency and lower carbon dioxide emissions, Hyundai said. Silicon solar panels have been attached to the roof of the vehicle and can charge while the car is moving.

Hyundai added that 30% to 60% of the car’s battery could be charged using solar technology. With six hours of charge per day, the vehicle could increase travel distances by 1,300 kilometres per year.

In a statement, Heui Won Yang, head of the Hyundai Motor Group’s Body Tech Unit, said that the technology allowed its customers to “actively tackle” issues related to emissions, adding that the business hoped to expand the technology to vehicles with traditional internal combustion engines.

The vehicle is being sold in South Korea and will also be released in the North American market, although there are currently no plans to make it available in Europe.

The idea of attaching solar panels to vehicles is not a new one, and neither is it restricted to land-based modes of transport.

In August 2018, an unmanned, solar-powered aircraft from the European aerospace giant Airbus completed a maiden flight lasting 25 days, 23 hours, and 57 minutes. In 2016, the Solar Impulse 2, a manned aircraft powered by the sun, managed to circumnavigate the globe without using fuel. The trip was completed in 17 separate legs.

Is This The Best Car For Nigerian Roads? - Photos

With the growing numbers of unmotorable roads in Nigeria especially in some remote part of the nation and those with some terminal and high level of disabilities, succor seems to have come for those who can afford this type of car and also for some of our political gladiators who seem to fall for anything cars.

While some brands are going the luxury, Hydunai seems to be thinking outside the box by making a robotic car, a car for the future.

The Hyundai elevate concept is based on a modular EV platform with the capability to switch out different bodies for specific situations. It moves using wheels with robotic legs that allow users to drive, walk or even climb over the most treacherous terrain. The robotic leg architecture has five degrees of freedom plus wheel hub propulsion motors and is enabled by the latest in electric actuator technology. This design is uniquely capable of both mammalian and reptilian walking gaits, allowing it to move in any direction.

The legs also fold up into a stowed drive-mode, where the power to the joints is cut, and the use of an integrated passive suspension system maximizes battery efficiency. This allows elevate to drive at highway speeds just like any other vehicle with additional abilities like climbing a five-foot wall, stepping over a five-foot gap, and even achieving a 15-foot wide track width, all while keeping its body and passengers completely level. furthermore, the combination of wheeled motion with articulating legs provides a new paradigm of mobility by enabling faster walking speeds, unique dynamic driving postures and torsional control at the end of each leg.

‘When a tsunami or earthquake hits, current rescue vehicles can only deliver first responders to the edge of the debris field. they have to go the rest of the way by foot. elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete,’ said John Suh, vice president and head of Hyundai cradle. ‘This technology goes well beyond emergency situations. people living with disabilities worldwide that don’t have access to an ADA ramp could hail an autonomous Hyundai elevate that could walk up to their front door, level itself, and allow their wheelchair to roll right in. the possibilities are limitless.’

Hyundai Motor Unveils Future Design Direction At Geneva Motor Show

Dubbed ‘Le Fil Rouge’, Hyundai Motor’s new design concept opens a new era for the South Korean automaker's direction with a sensuous sportiness theme. Proportion, architecture, styling, and technology are harmonized while creating a distinctive and unique look and feel for the company’s vehicles. As its name implies, ‘Le Fil Rouge’ (English translation: common thread) is a reflection of its belief that the brand’s past, present and future designs are all connected.

Hyundai’s ‘Le Fil Rouge’ creates a proportional character based on the golden-ratio – a common mathematical ratio found in nature – which enabled the designers to create an aesthetically pleasing, natural-looking composition that embodies charisma. Proportional uniqueness is achieved through a long wheelbase, large wheels, and short overhangs. A respectful dash-to-axle – the distance from front wheel center to the base of windshield – provides a comfortable driving position, whilst a higher beltline completes the overall look.

With the concept car, Hyundai took a new approach called ‘light architecture’, to integrate a progressive identity into the brand’s design heritage. Light architecture generates a dynamic look and forwards motion effect for the vehicle. The front and the rear pillars, as well as the roof, are seamlessly blended into the overarching silhouette of the car – as though the car is drawn with a single line. The exterior and interior are smoothly merged by the ‘tube architecture’, keeping the exterior’s sensuous and sporty character consistent inside the vehicle. The tube architecture’s principle is to create the same emotional value inside and outside the vehicle, while also allowing for a lightweight profile.

The interior design differentiates between the needs of both the driver and passengers. The front passenger seat maximizes comfort even on long-distance trips with more ample leg room, while the driver’s seat is designed to add to the fun of driving with optimized ergonomics. a wrap-around architecture emphasizes depth, creating a calm, spacious and comfortable travel environment for everyone in the car.
