How to drive safely on the expressway

The importance of safe driving on the expressway cannot be exaggerated because its high speed can easily lead to catastrophic accidents. Even seasoned drivers must abide by the basic rules of safe driving because danger lurks everywhere on the expressway.

Preparations to make before driving on the expressway

Plan ahead with enough traveling time

* If you plan to use the expressway for a long-distance trip, as with the majority of drivers, you are recommended to plan ahead a driving route, when and where to rest between driving.

* Find out the weather and traffic conditions of your destination and en route places from radio or TV and reflect them in your plan.

Check your vehicle in advance

* Thoroughly check the status of fuel, cooling water, engine oil and tires so as to prevent a vehicle breakdown, which can cause accidents or unplanned stopping.

* As for freight vehicles, check the status of cargo to prevent it from falling. Check the condition of straps and lids on a general basis between driving.

* Prepare a spare tire, maintenance tools, flash light, and first-aid kit.

Expressway safe driving tips

Look ahead

The majority of expressway accidents occur when drivers fail to keep looking ahead. Drivers should look at not only the back but also the front of the vehicle in front.

Enter slow, accelerate fast

Before you enter an expressway, signal your intention with the turn signal, gradually increase your speed in the acceleration lane, and pay attention to other vehicles. Enter when it is safe. Upon entering, accelerate fast in order to avoid slowing down other vehicles.

Drive in designated lanes

I know we are not used to this in Nigeria, especially in Lagos where they are always in hurry. After you pass a slowly moving vehicle using a passing lane, always return to your original lane. Return only when there is enough inter-vehicle space between you and the vehicle behind you.

Do not speed, slow down at the entrance and exit

Expressway accidents caused by speeding are likely to be large-scale ones that deal severe damage to the involved. Keep in mind that speeding is the biggest threat to driving safety. Make sure that you slow down at the entrance and exit of an expressway. Many accidents occur because drivers entering a rest stop fail to slow down or drivers exiting an expressway intersection hesitate.

BMW unveils design for zero-emission motorrad concept link bike

BMW has given a glimpse of the future of urban motorcycles - and they claim it is all about electric.

The 'BMW Motorrad Concept Link' uses radical electric battery packs stored in its base and even features a reverse gear to make parking simple.

It has a touchscreen dashboard and can be connected to the rider's online calendar so it always knows where they want to go.

The concept even features a smart seat that can automatically adjust to suit each rider.

The concept is also said to be extremely fast - although BMW has refused to release more details on its speed.

BMW hopes the concept could kickstart a new type of vehicle.

'The technical realities of electric drive – such as the flat energy packs in the underfloor and the compact drive on the rear wheel – allowed us to create a highly distinctive design which shapes a new segment,' said explains Alexander Buchan, Head of Vehicle Design at BMW Motorrad.

'The resulting expressive power of the vehicle is absolutely new for BMW Motorrad and breaks with all conventional viewing patterns.'

BMW says the concept blends fast acceleration and easy handling.

Rolls Royce Sweptail Coupé Is Designed and Tailored to Fit A Specific Customer Request

Magnificent! That word is not enough to describe Rolls-Royce Sweptail. A year ago, Rolls-Royce presented 103EX that invoked its coachbuilding heritage and inspired its future clientele.

In the automotive industry, Sweptail is the same as Haute Couture in the fashion industry. It is designed and tailored to fit a specific customer that came to the House of Rolls Royce with a spectacular idea then shared in the creative process. Started in 2013 where Rolls-Royce was approached by one of its valued customers, a connoisseur, and collector of one-off items such as private aircraft and super yachts. Basically, this customer wanted Rolls Royce to realize his vision of one-off luxury motor car like no other.

The design was inspired by the beautiful coach built Rolls-Royces of the 1920s and 1930s. This client wanted to create a coach built two-seater coupe that features a large panoramic glass roof and as a Rolls-Royce connoisseur, this gentleman was inspired a lot of many of his favorite cars from marque’s golden era, classic and modern yachts.

Sweptail without a doubt has marque’s DNA, if you take a look its initial formality from the front, you can clearly see that it is different and distinct Rolls-Royce. The solid character of the front profile would get your attention, creating focus on a new treatment of the iconic Rolls-Royce Pantheon grille. Move around to the side of this car, you’ll find that its striking silhouette defines its unique character. Flowing beautifully from upright to formal frontal aspect. Starting from the leading edge of the windscreen, the roofline continues to accelerate and fire backward towards the rear of the motor car, overshooting the boot lid edge to emphasize its length.

Mazda at 50; A Timeline of its car collections

Mazda has a long and proud history of doing things differently from other automakers – a spirit manifested, among other ways, by its embrace of the rotary engine. But that unusual powertrain technology isn't just another unconventional choice for Mazda. It's at the core of its history, and has been for 50 years now.

To hear Mazda tell the story, half a century ago it was known for little more than minuscule passenger cars and work trucks. It wanted to branch out, and knew it needed to do something different if it was going to challenge the established players.

So in 1961 it licensed an usual engine design from Wankel GmbH and NSU Motorenwerke. Unfortunately the design didn't work and the engine seized, so Mazda's chief engineer Kenichi Yamamoto put together a team called the "47 Samurai" who achieved what no other automaker could and made the rotary engine viable.

The resulting Mazda Cosmo Sport 110S became the first rotary-powered production car on May 30, 1967 – 50 years ago today. And while the engine is sadly no longer in production, it had a good run, with nearly 2 million built. Included among them were three generations of RX-7, another for the RX-8, and numerous other vehicles stretching from a 26-passenger bus to the quad-rotor 787B that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991. Now if only it'd bring it back.

NATA National Executives Visit NADDC Director General

A 20-man delegation of National Executives of the Nigerian Automobile Technicians Association (NATA) led by its President, Chief B.C. Ezenenwu today Wednesday 24 May, 2017 visited the Director General of National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Mr. Jelani Aliyu, MFR, in Abuja.

Jelani Aliyu Makes Declaration of Commitment to Rise Above Challenges

The newly appointed Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Mr. Jelani Aliyu (MFR), has recently assumed duties at the NADDC Headquarters in Gudu District, Abuja.

Below is his maiden declaration of commitment to Nigeria and Nigerians on his mandate in NADDC and pathway to achieving the aims and objectives of the Council:

"It is with huge honour and pleasure that I serve our magnificent country, Nigeria. I am committed to adding significant value to the automotive sector, and very much look forward to working with all my team at the National Automotive Design and Development Council, to positively and dynamically engage all the committed stakeholders, both in the public and private sector. My objective is to create a win-win for all the progressive companies involved and for the Nigerian people.

There is a certain magic that is Africa, and there is even a greater magic that is Nigeria. Any country with a population of over 180 million is serious business. My objective with the NADDC is to contribute to the success of this magnificent nation, to reach out and positively touch as many lives as possible as we enable access to attainable, effective and exciting transportation solutions that will add significant value and enable economic growth to every man, woman and child.

The importance of the automotive sector in any nation, whether developed or developing, cannot be underestimated, as it is both the direct provider of the logistics of life and the enabler of exponential multiplier effects.

These are critical and very exciting times for Nigeria and we have two options as a nation: we either, 1) choose to maintain the mundane status quo, inch along and be left behind as every other country speeds by taking millions around the world out of poverty, or 2) we can decide to strategize and boldly reach for the stars.

And so, imagine in the not too distant future a Nigeria of astounding accomplishments, a Nigeria so advanced that a majority of the problems we now face would by then have been relegated to the pages of history forever. That Nigeria is not just a possibility; it is an imperative destination, one that we must reach, as it may very well be our only hope for the very survival of our people.

The country is indeed now very fortunate to have leadership that is seriously committed to universal progress across the nation. A leadership committed to diversification away from oil, into industry and agriculture. And so, as the NADDC, this is an opportunity that we must seize to energize the automotive sector and make Nigeria not just another manufacturer of automobiles, but an advanced hub of automotive innovation that will set forth the future of Africa's transportation solutions.

We shall empower our talented youths with the necessary professional training in contemporary automotive design and development, leveraging the most sophisticated technology, so they will innovate, design and develop automotive and transportation solutions that are in tune with our culture, climate, geography and economic structure.

Our manufacturing stakeholders must be encouraged and supported to leverage advanced technology in providing the most applicable, safest, most durable and cost-effective vehicles. The NADDC is committed to identifying progressive technical partners and investors from around the world who can work with us to develop the automotive sector potential in Nigeria.

Nigeria must not be defined by its current challenges, they are not who we are, we are bigger than them. We must be defined by our dreams and aspirations; we must be defined by what we can achieve. We must be defined by a better tomorrow, nothing is impossible, there are no impossibilities, there is only a better Nigeria to build."
