FAAN Releases Lists of Prohibited Items For Passengers

In a bid to ensure safety among passengers, airport and to protect lives and property in all airports across Nigeria, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria has listed out some prohibited items which are not allowed either at the airport or on the plane. This according to FAAN is to ensure that both the airline and passengers are safe.

All Issues Concerning Enugu Airport Now Resolved - FAAN

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has expressed its “profound appreciation and gratitude” to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for fulfilling his promise to address the identified challenges that hitherto posed a threat to the safety of air travelers at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

Speaking during the inspection tour of the airport and its environs to ascertain the level of compliance by the Enugu State Government and other relevant institutions to the request made by FAAN, the Managing Director, Capt. Hamisu Rabiu Yadudu, told Gov. Ugwuanyi, who was present at the exercise, that they were satisfied with the interventions made so far by his administration, such as the relocation of the Orie Emene market, abattoir, and the dismantling of the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) Radio/TV Mast, which the Managing Director, Mr. Chukwuma Ogbonna, promised during the inspection, will be completed in the next one month.

Capt. Yadudu disclosed that the issue of relocating the ENPOWER Free Trade Zone, adjacent to the runway of the airport, has been resolved with the management of the establishment, which was confirmed by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Engr. Emeka Eneh, during the inspection.

He said that after a negot iation by both parties “the required land that FAAN wants to protect is secured” for safety and security, adding: “We are happy with that and ENPOWER Free Trade Zone are also happy that with the remaining land, they can still go ahead with their initiative and develop the land”.

On the airport runway, the MD further disclosed that the engineering team of FAAN and its consultant from the Federal Ministry of Aviation will “very soon commence a comprehensive exercise to make sure that our passengers are safe”.

The FAAN boss, who maintained that “the entire matter has been resolved”, added that the federal government’s agency is working with two solution providers to solve the issue of water scarcity, and equally fence the airport.

Capt. Yadudu while seeking further timely intervention of Gov. Ugwuanyi, frowned at those living “on the air field” near the airport and requested the governor to take prompt action on the matter as usual, stressing that “the issue of illegal residents is very much of safety concern and risky”.

Responding, Gov. Ugwuanyi who assured the prompt intervention of the state government, noted that his administration is fully committed to the safety of lives and property as well as the progress of the Enugu international airport.

The governor added that he had to shelve other official engagements to be with the management of FAAN to ensure that all issues affecting the safety of the airport are resolved expeditiously

Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri Airport on Fire - Photos

There is chaos as the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo state, is currently on fire.

The cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report as men of the state fire service and other emergency officials are currently at the scene trying to put out the fire.

The facility is the first state-government built an airport but it was later taken over by the Federal Government and handed over to FAAN to manage. 

However, FAAN has reacted to the fire outbreak, according to the press release obtained by AutoReportNG. The release was signed by Mrs. Herinetta Yakubu, read below...

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to inform passengers and the general public that there was a fire incident that affected some parts of the terminal building of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri at about 1400hours today.

The fire was however curtailed swiftly by officers of the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services Department of FAAN.

There was no casualty and normal operations have since commenced at the airport.

The Authority has commenced preliminary investigations into the cause of the incident.

Power Outage Hits Lagos Airport For Five Hours

Flight operations were halted temporarily at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos after the power supply to the terminal went off.

The outage was said to have lasted more five hours before it was rectified by the engineers of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

During the period, flight operations were slightly disrupted as airlines' counter staff, profilers and others had to switch to manual, which slowed down operations.

According to reports, some of the travelers had to use hand fans, while others, especially male passengers, resorted to removing their shirts.

At the time of filing this report, the cause of the outage could not be ascertained, but FAAN attributed it to an electrical fault.

A statement by Henrietta Yakubu, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, FAAN, said the outage occurred at the D Wing of the airport.

"The outage is due to a minor electrical fault," she said.

She further stated that the agency's engineers were already working to rectify the fault, assuring the public that normalcy would be restored soon. She, however, said the outage did not affect flight operations at the airport, as normal flight operations continued uninterrupted.

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers 1 year of age and older coming from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.

The vaccination requirement is imposed by this country for protection against Yellow Fever since the principal mosquito vector Aedes aegypti is present in its territory.

A Yellow Fever certificate is valid 10 days after vaccination.

Existing and new Yellow Fever vaccination certificates are now valid for life. The World Health Organization announced that as of 11 July 2016, countries can no longer require travellers to show proof of re-vaccination or a booster dose as a condition of entry. Travellers should note that this new regulation may not be honoured by all border authorities during the transition phase.

The airport has a single terminal with separate facilities for international and domestic flights. In 2009, the airport served 1,081,587 passengers, making it the third-busiest airport in Nigeria.

On 18 August 2006, the airport was closed for repairs. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority stated that the emergency shutdown was in order to overhaul the runway and build a fence around the facility. Such maintenance had been in planning stages for several months, but an electrical fire on 17 August 2006 made repairs immediately necessary. All domestic flights were diverted to Sam Mbakwe Airport (Owerri), Akanu Ibiam International Airport (Enugu) and Margaret Ekpo International Airport (Calabar), while international flights were diverted to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (Abuja) or Murtala Mohammed International Airport (Lagos).

Repair work started in January 2007, while re-opening was originally expected to be in August 2007. In June 2007, work was suspended due to safety concerns of the engineers.

In December 2007, the airport was reopened to a limited capacity. Operations were restricted to daytime until the first quarter of 2008, by which time the new CAT III lighting system became fully operational.

40 Years After, FG Unveils Nigeria Air As Nigeria's New National Carrier

Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika on Wednesday unveiled the name of Nigeria’s national carrier, as well as the logo at the Farnborough International Airshow in London.

Sirika said the national carrier is Nigeria Air.

During the unveiling, the minister said, “this will be a National Carrier that is Private sector-led and driven. It is a business, not a social service. The government will not be involved in running it or deciding who runs it. The investors will have full responsibility for this.”

“The Nigerian Government will not own more than 5% (maximum) of the new National Carrier. The government will not be involved in running it or deciding who runs it,” he said

He added that government is in talks with aircraft providers, “We’ve been talking to Airbus and Boeing (and they’re present at this event) regarding the aircraft for and we will be making announcements very soon. We are currently negotiating.”
