FRSC set to impound the following vechicles

The Federal Road Safety Corps is stepping up enforcement on illegal use of Number Plates. The Corps has directed its Commands nationwide to clampdown on violation of Vehicle Identification (Number Plates) regulations. In focus are the following:

a) Use of illegal Number plates, for example, all vehicles bearing Number Plates such as PEACE AMBASSADOR, PEACE 1, are to be impounded on sight

b) Use of private Number Plates for commercial purposes

c) Use of diplomatic Number Plates/Vehicles for commercial purposes, particularly along the border towns

d) Some motorists, particularly government officials and politicians covering their vehicle number plates sown covers in varying color- most especially black and white

e) Use of plastic plates and other forms of imitations of Number Plates and

f) Use of fake Number Plates.

Those who are operating their vehicles in breach of the traffic laws and regulations are advised to desist from the illegality as the violators will be arrested and prosecuted while the vehicles involved will also be impounded. All motorists and the general public should note.

Driving On An Empty Tank? You May Need This

Every driver occasionally lets their gas tank get low enough to trigger the low fuel warning light. Even though we all know it's best to keep your gas tank ¼ full, we still let it run low from time to time. Knowing how far you can drive on an empty gas tank will help keep you from getting stuck on the side of the road.

Before letting your car run on empty again, it’s worth knowing just how many – or how few – miles you can actually drive after the light comes on. It’s also smart to know what else is at stake when you let your gas tank run to near depletion.

1: Is it dangerous to drive with the low fuel warning light illuminated?

The primary concern when driving on empty is the possibility of running out of fuel and getting stuck on the road, which is not only a hassle, but also a potentially dangerous situation. You may break down on the freeway, where the surrounding cars are traveling upwards of 70 MPH, or you may break down on a blind turn on the highway, where a vehicle could rear end you especially in a place like Lagos-Ibadan expressway, 3rd Mainland et al.

That said, driving on empty can also do damage to your vehicle. If you do run out of gas, you can do damage to your catalytic converter, which may then need to be repaired or replaced as a result. Even the simple act of driving with a low amount of fuel in your tank can damage your fuel pump, as any debris or contamination in the gas (which naturally settles at the bottom of the tank), will be sent through your fuel pump when the tank is nearly empty. You’re not going to ruin your car the first time you drive it with the low fuel warning light on, but it’s a harmful practice to do regularly.

2: How trustworthy is the distance to empty gauge?

Most modern vehicles have a distance to empty gauge on their instrument cluster, which provides an approximation of how many miles can be driven before the car runs out of gas. Many people prefer to use this feature in lieu of the low fuel warning light, figuring that if the gauge says there are 20 miles left, then they have 20 miles before they run out of gas.

However, this is a dangerous practice, as the distance to empty gauge only offers a rough approximation. This approximation is based on the average mileage that you have attained while driving your vehicle, which means that it may not be very accurately relative to your current driving conditions.

For instance, if most of your driving is done on the highway, then your distance to an empty meter is probably not very accurate when you’re stuck in traffic. So while the gauge provides a fairly accurate approximation when your tank is relatively full, it shouldn’t be used to figure out your exact number of miles remaining in the tank when you’re running on empty.

3: How far can you drive on empty?

Exactly how far you can drive on empty depends on your vehicle, your driving habits, and road conditions. However, you may be surprised to see how few miles you actually can drive once the low fuel warning light comes on.

Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Brake Rotor/Disc

Common signs of faulty car brake rotors include noisy brakes, vibrations that can be felt through the pedal, and score marks on the rotor.

Disc brake rotors are metal discs that work together with the brake pads and calipers to slow the vehicle. Brake rotors bolt directly to the wheel hub, so they spin in direct relation to wheel speed. When the brake pedal is depressed, the calipers squeeze the brake pads against the spinning rotors to slow and stop the wheels and the vehicle. Since rotors work to slow the vehicle by using friction from direct contact with the brake pads, they do wear out over time and will eventually need to be replaced. Usually, when rotors have a problem, they produce a few symptoms that alert the driver they require attention.

1. Noisy brakes

One of the first symptoms commonly associated with bad brake rotors is noise. If the rotors are warped (meaning not perfectly flat) or severely worn, they may produce squealing or squeaking sounds. Usually, warped rotors will produce a squeak, while severely worn rotors will produce a scraping sound. However, the squealing noise could originate from worn brake pads as well.

2. Vibrations from the brakes

Another symptom of bad brake rotors is excessive vibration or pulsation coming from the brakes. Warped or excessively worn rotors may vibrate irregularly and cause vibrations that can be felt in the pedal, and sometimes through the vehicle’s chassis. Warped rotors may also produce a pulsating feel that will be felt in the pedal when the brakes are applied.

Airbus’ New Drone-Car Hybrid Takes to the Sky When Stuck in Traffic

Imagine the world where you should find yourself stuck in traffic, your car could vertically take off into the air and fly you to your destination? That’s exactly what Airbus x Italdesign’s latest drone-car prototype is designed to do.  The aptly named ‘pop.up.' system consists of a passenger capsule that works just as well on the road as it does in the sky, thanks to it’s two different and independent electric propelled modules, one for the ground and one for the air. When the vehicle finds itself in highly congested traffic, the capsule disconnects from the ground module and is carried up into the sky by a 5 by 4.4-metre air module propelled by eight rotors. In such situations, pop-up becomes a self-piloted air vehicle, taking advantage of the third dimension to get from A to B efficiently while avoiding traffic.

The vehicle combines the flexibility of a small two-seater ground vehicle with the freedom and speed of a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) air vehicle. This means the passenger can go exactly where they want to without worrying about switching between different travel modes. The system is designed as a new user-focused way of moving efficiently through cities and hopes to reduce traffic congestion as megacities start to become increasingly saturated.

The drone car hybrid comes in tandem with an easy-to-use app, allowing passengers to book their journey. The system judges the traffic congestion, costs, and ridesharing demands, and automatically suggests the best way to arrive whether it be via road, sky, or both. Once passengers reach their destination, the air and ground modules with the capsule autonomously return to dedicated recharge stations to wait for their next customers.

Mathias Thomsen, general manager for urban air mobility at Airbus explains the philosophy behind the group’s pop.up concept, stating that ‘adding the third dimension to seamless multi-modal transportation networks will without a doubt improve the way we live and how we get from A to B. taldesign, with its long track record of exceptional vehicle design was an exciting partner for Airbus for this unique concept project.’

Jorg Astalosh, CEO at Italdesign elaborates, stating that ‘if you want to design the urban vehicle of the future, the traditional car cannot alone be the solution for megacities, you also have to think about sustainable and intelligent infrastructure, apps, integration, power systems, urban planning, social aspects, and so on.’ the duo hope that their multi-modal vision for thirst dimension travel will be the future of megacity transportation.
