The Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, launched the 100 security patrol vehicles his government earlier purchased to enhance security operations in the State.

Governor Makinde, who equally launched the State’s Security Code 615, declared that the welfare of security officials would be the top priority of his administration.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted the Governor as making the declaration at a brief event to mark the distribution of the 100 Kia Rio units to security agencies in the state.

According to the Governor, with the launch of sophisticated gadgets and communication tools in the vehicles, criminals would have no place to hide in the state.

The statement further added that the government of Oyo State was bent on keeping the State safe, so as to ensure that those who come to do business in the state can sleep with two eyes closed.

The Governor described the launching of the vehicles as a milestone in the State, adding that the welfare of security officers will be given top priority.

The Governor maintained that criminal elements in the State were in for a tough time because the security agencies now have Oyo State covered in terms of communication equipment and other gadgets.

He equally tasked security officers to be ready and up to the task to combat crimes in the State.

“In furtherance of our administration’s vision for a safe Oyo State, we are here to launch these security patrol vehicles. The men are ready. They are no-nonsense officers and men. So, criminals are now in for it in Oyo State, if they ever try to come in here, I believe we are up to the task.

“I thank our service commanders for their cooperation for contributing the officers and men that will carry out this task to secure Oyo State for us. We have Oyo State covered in terms of communication, which is a new one. It means that no matter where in Oyo State, we will get criminals. I can’t wait to see officers chase criminals down the streets with the siren blaring because they now have everything that is required of them to do their job.

Policemen Driving Against Traffic Crush Two Okada Passengers To Death In Ogun State - PHOTOS

Some policemen allegedly driving against the traffic, on Monday, crushed two motorcycle passengers to death on the Long Bridge end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The motorcyclist was also said to have sustained injuries during the crash involving a white Toyota Hilux pickup van with number plate GGE 960 DD and a Bajaj motorcycle with number plate MEK 418 VH.

According to eyewitnesses, the policemen in the patrol vehicle took to their heels after the accident occurred around 10.50am, while emergency responders, who rushed to the scene, took the injured victim to the hospital.

The remains of the deceased were said to have been deposited in the Lagos State Emergency Centre at the old tollgate area.

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “When the accident happened, the policemen ran out of the vehicle and jumped off the bridge and ran away. No one could catch them.”

At the scene of the accident, other commercial motorcyclists, while mourning the death of the victims, threatened to burn the van.

During the rescue operation, a Federal Road Safety Corps official, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “We got the distress call and we came down to the scene, but before we got here, we realised that the people around had done the rescue.”

When contacted, the Sector Commander, FRSC, Ogun State, Clement Oladele, said one of the three victims involved in the accident died.

Oladele stated, “Three people were involved in the accident, one died and the two injured victims were rescued to the Lagos State Emergency Centre, Ojota. The corpse of the dead victim was deposited in the hospital’s mortuary.

“The suspected cause of the accident was route violation as the driver of the vehicle was speeding while driving against the traffic. The vehicles involved were a white Toyota Hilux pickup van with number plate GGE 960 DD and a Bajaj motorcycle with number plate MEK 418 VH.”

However, the spokesperson for the police in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said two passengers died, while the motorcyclist sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he is responding to treatment.

He said the vehicle involved was registered and branded, adding that it had been impounded and the owner/driver would be traced and made to face justice.

Oyeyemi said driving against the traffic was a serious offence and security agents were not allowed to do so except in emergencies, and such vehicle would be a security vehicle or an ambulance, which must carry a sign that would alert people to the emergency.

He added that investigation into the accident was ongoing and gave an assurance that the driver would be identified, arrested and prosecuted, adding that the Commissioner of Police in the state had directed that everything possible must be done to apprehend those involved, whether they were policemen or ordinary citizens.

Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has re-stated his administration's commitment towards ensuring that Lagos is crime-free.

He made this known at the commissioning of 125 patrol vehicles and 35 patrol motorcycles for the use of security operatives in the state.

Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the model thought-out 13 years ago, with the support of the Lagos State House of Assembly to create the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) has paid off so-good that the Federal government wants to replicate.

According to him, the idea of creating a security trust fund has worked well for the State, noting that donation of the vehicles and motorcycles can only help rejuvenate his administration's plan at ensuring maximum security for the people of Lagos.

The Governor said: "This young administration is just 99 days old; security and good governance happens to be the sixth pillar of our 'THEMES' policy agenda and we have attempted modestly to ensure that we engage each and every of those pillars

"What we are doing today is a demonstration of our commitment to good governance by ensuring that the dividends of democracy are not just felt but are also things that people can feel, see and we can act on"

Promising that security of lives and property is core to his government, the Governor stated his administration's resolve to support all outfits responsible for safety.

The Governor, while reacting to the recent reprisal attack against xenophobia in Lagos, warned residents to shun criminality and lawlessness, saying “that no one should be found on the other side of the law”.

Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the Federal Government was already handling the xenophobic matter diplomatically. He urged Lagosians to remain peaceful and orderly at all times.
"Security of lives and property is not only critical to us it is something that we will not turn deaf ears to.

"Lagos will continue to remain safe, Lagos will continue to place security will not be taken for granted and based on the incidents that have happened in the last two days, the government will certainly not condone any incident where we have a break down of the law," he said.

"We will be passing 120 pickup vehicles and about 35 motorcycles to our various security formations and we will determine who gets what but this is just the beginning. We know that security is everybody's concern and that is why we as the government have seen the need for this today.
He, however, advised parents to ensure their wards are not used by people with criminal intent as necessary organs of government are adequately equipped to handle all issues at hand.

Never Try To Touch An Officer In An Unfriendly Manner - Police Gives Safety Tips With Policemen

The police have been in the news for a while now from SARS to uniform men demanding for bribes as if it's their right. The internet has been trending with many hashtags such as #ReformPolice, #EndSARS among others. In the wake of recent killings of innocent citizens by unscrupulous policemen and also unprovoked attacks on some policemen by some criminally-minded persons, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Frank Mba, has provided tips for safe and cordial interaction with the police at different encounters.

Ordinarily, encounters between the citizens and the Police or other law enforcement agents should be reassuring and delightful. In fact, the mere sight of the Police ought to create an instant feeling of relief, safety, and security. This, unfortunately, is not the reality in Nigeria today.

In fact, some encounters in the past had led to embarrassment, injuries, permanent disability and, in extreme cases, death of the citizens. Similarly, some security agents have also suffered molestation and harm from such encounters.

While Police officers are reminded of the need to exercise ‘courageous calm’ and avoid resort to the use of deadly force or lethal weapon at the slightest provocation, members of the public, on the other hand, are expected to avoid actions that could turn simple encounters with security personnel into more serious ones.

It is against this backdrop that we are today providing tips that could help in enhancing a cordial relationship between the Police and the citizenry.

Tips for a safe and cordial relationship at checkpoints

When approaching a security checkpoint or when flagged-down by the Police or other security agencies;

- Endeavor to slow down your vehicle. It shows that you are not reckless. It also douses suspicion that you are a criminal and may want to speed-off.
Turn down the volume of your car stereo. Courtesy demands this. Besides, you are able to hear each other better. This simple act will also help you to win the confidence of the security operative.

- Keep your hands visible to avoid unnecessary suspicion or fear by the officers that you are attempting to bring out a gun or other harmful objects to attack them

- Turn on the inner light of your vehicle while approaching the cops (if at night). It readily sends an unspoken message that you have nothing to hide.

- Be friendly and cheerful. Commend the officers especially when you see them working under very unfriendly weather conditions such as the rains, the harsh harmattan conditions, excessive heat, cold or sunshine. We know it’s their job, but a little kind word from you will do a lot of good. Remember when you smile at the mirror, the mirror smiles back at you. Endeavour to be polite even when answering questions put to you by the officers

- Don’t dare or challenge an armed security man to a duel. Oftentimes, you hear people say things like ‘shoot me if you can!” Note that this is a recipe for disaster! It is very provocative and an unnecessary call for war. So, please play safe, more so, as you do not know the state of mind of the officer concerned.

- Also, don’t go into a physical fight with an armed security officer. He may resort to the use of his weapon (rightly or wrongly) to defend himself.
Avoid unnecessary argument with armed security personnel. There are a thousand and one ways to seek redress where you feel your rights have been infringed upon.

- Never try to touch an officer in an unfriendly manner. He may suspect you of trying to disarm him.

- If you are a regular traveler or road user, make sure you have the police emergency phone numbers of the route you operate. You never can tell when an emergency situation could arise and you need the Police to come to your aid.

- Make sure you have all your relevant car papers and desist from actions or inactions that constitute either a criminal or traffic offence. Such infractions of the law provide veritable grounds for possible charges and other forms of adversarial contact with the Police or other law enforcement agencies, including unnecessary arguments.

- Don’t give the impression that you are unhappy to see an officer on his beat or that he is wasting your time. But if you do have an emergency, politely inform the officer. Don’t speed off while still being checked.
Take note of the name tags, Force or Service numbers, personal description, description of weapons or patrol vehicle of the security officer especially where the officers begin to conduct themselves in an unprofessional manner.

- Seek an audience with the most senior police officer at the checkpoint if things are not working out smoothly.

- Politely insist to be taken to the police station if your complaint is not properly addressed.

Nobody prays to be locked up in the police station, neither does anyone pray to visit them for any reason but at times, the police have to do their job in maintaining peace and order in the country.

The Nigerian Police have been rated below par in terms of work and office space. An average police station is unkempt, dirty and most of its apparatus either outdated or looted.

While we are still battling with Police reform and Police enlightenment due to the way and manner they behave, a local government chairman in Kaduna North, Hon Saleh Shuaibu seems to be thinking otherwise. He built a state of the art police station in Rafin Guza. According to reports, the police station was fully fitted with air conditions, the floor tiled and the edifice can be mistaken to be a bank or an executive suite.

Does The Police Have The Right To Stop And Search My Car?

Many at times our rights are being violated either due to the ignorance of the law or we are too afraid of the law enforcers. Nigerians have cried bitterly over the harassment of soldiers, MOLPOL, SARS and others who have forcefully search their cars, laptops, and phones without a search warrant.

We did some digging as to what the law says and what the police are meant to do in this case.

While police generally need a warrant to search you or your property — during a traffic stop, police only need probable cause to legally search your vehicle. Probable cause means police must have some facts or evidence to believe you’re involved in criminal activity.

In other words, an officer’s hunch without evidence of illegal activity is not enough to legally search your car. Before searching, he must observe something real. Common examples of probable cause include the sight or smell of contraband in plain view or plain smell or an admission of guilt for a specific crime. The presentation of any of these facts would allow an officer to perform a search and make an arrest.

Be aware that minor traffic violations (e.g. speeding, broken tail-light, or expired registration) are not considered probable cause.

The Police Act in Section 29, states that a police officer ‘…may detain and search any person whom he reasonably suspects of having in his possession or conveying in any manner anything which he has reason to believe to have been stolen or otherwise unlawfully obtained.’

Therefore, the police have the power to search, however, it is not absolute. There has to be a reasonable suspicion that the person has stolen or unlawfully obtained property in his/her possession. That is the position of the law. The test to decide what is reasonable, is something referred to as the ‘objective test’ i.e. whether a reasonable man would have conducted the search of a person in the circumstances.

Therefore, in determining whether a search carried out in you is an unreasonable one, you would have to look at your circumstances. For instance, did you sufficiently identify if asked to by the police? Did you answer any of their questions satisfactorily? If you did, then it might be argued that there were no reasonable grounds for the search. If the police officer did not have any reasonable grounds for suspicion, then you might be able to sue for unlawful search and harassment. An unlawful search is also a violation of your right to privacy guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution.

Can The Police Search My Phone, Laptop Or Electronic Device?

The police have a right to search phones and laptops, however, this search can only be performed if a search warrant has been issued. If the police officer does not have a warrant to search your phone or laptop or other electronic devices then any search carried out is an illegal one.

What To Do If You Are Stopped?

We always urge caution in any relation with security officials for your own safety. If you are stopped, you should follow the below steps:

- Always greet policemen and policewomen as “Officer”. For example, you may start off with “Good afternoon, Officer. How’s it going today?” Under no circumstances should you ever talk back, raise your voice, or use a road word with a police officer. Being hostile with police is stupid and dangerous. You can’t win that game.

- When you are stopped, make note of the officers’ names

- Answer all their questions satisfactorily and do not antagonise them

- If upon answering their questions they request a search, tell them that you do not believe that they have reasonable grounds to request a search as you believe you have answered their questions satisfactorily

- If the officer insists, then comply, however, inform them that you will be raising a formal complaint of an unlawful search of you and your property

- If an officer proceeds with search, comply fully.

- After the search is completed, you should either raise a formal complaint by following the process laid out here, or you may look to engage the services of a lawyer to make a formal complaint and potentially instigate a suit and claim compensation for unlawful search and harassment.

We should also note that if you are a female person and you were physically searched, then any search performed on you must only be conducted by a female officer, this is the position of the law, and a physical search on you by a male officer would be unlawful.

Ogun Commissioner of Police Rescued Accidents Victims Along Abeokuta-Sango Road - Photos

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Iliyasu rescued accident victims at Itori town, Abeokuta -Sango expressway, Ogun State at about 4:58pm today. On getting to the scene with his convoy including the Ogun Police Community Relations Committee PCRC Chairman, Pastor (Dr.) M. A. Lawson, Deputy State Chairman, Ven. (Arch.) Samson Popoola, Force PPRO, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, CP Ahmed ordered his convoy to stop and rescue the victims of the accident which occurred this evening.

However, the Commissioner of Police had displayed an humanitarian effort, unknown to him, he had actually stopped to rescue the Head of Treasury/ Accountant General of Ogun State Government, Mr. Mukaila O. Dosunmu and his wife who were returning from their children's school before the unfortunate accident happened. CP Iliyasu immediately conveyed the victims with his vehicle to the hospital for proper medical attention.

According to Ogun PCRC PRO, Prince Samuel Obinuga the vehicle of the accident victims was a total wreck but the couples escaped the accident with minor injuries and currently responding to treatment.
