Truck Loaded With Stolen Petrol Caught Fire In Ipaja, LASEMA Averts Tragedy - Photos

Following the Pipeline Vandalism on Monday, 11th November 2019 at Abesan Estate, Boys Town end of Ipaja, behind Honeyland School at about 8:18 a.m where fire broke out due to activities of oil pipeline vandals, and a truck at Ijora bridge inward Iganmu that constituted obstruction to free vehicular activities when more than half of its consignment got stuck beneath the bridge as a result of miscalculations by its driver, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency's Director-General, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu explained that there was no loss of lives in the two incidences.

Osanyintolu stated that a tanker with registration number AGL 591 XP laden with 36,000 litres of stolen Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, the second of such to exit the site of the vandalized pipeline at the back of Honeyland School, Abesan Estate, while trying to escape came in contact with an electric pole which resulted into a fire outbreak making the oil tanker burn midway before it was curtailed by the relevant agencies. 

Speaking further, the LASEMA Boss reiterated that no casualties or fatalities were recorded, nor were any injuries incurred as residents of the area rallied support for the combined response team of LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire Service but two cars belonging to yet - to - be identified residents, were razed, Toyota Camry with registration number EPE 79 DF and completely burnt a Volkswagen saloon car beyond recognition, while activities of the vandals left PMS spilt in the entire area which had been cordoned off on arrival of the LASEMA team for safety of residents and rescue teams in tandem with International best practices.

After putting out the fire completely, officials of Pipeline Maintenance/Security Committee from NNPC/PPMC whom the Agency's officials at the incident scene contacted, on arrival, trans-loaded the remaining PMS in the half-burnt tanker of the vandals, with officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, on standby to take possession of the oil Tanker truck afterwards.

Having completed the task of safely Transloading the remaining PMS from the vandal's articulated vehicle, the affected back tyres of the tanker were refixed to enable its recovery to the Head Office of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, at Alausa with the assistance of the Agency's Heavy-Duty Equipment.

In a related development, LASEMA recovered an accident truck at Ijora bridge inward Iganmu that constituted an obstruction to free vehicular activities when more than half of its consignment got stuck beneath the bridge as a result of miscalculations by its driver.

The truck with registration number OKLAHOMA 517-2GJ conveying a loaded consignment got stuck under the bridge due to carelessness on the part of the driver which made it's cargo tilt off the truck on impact, effectively cutting off other road users by obstructing free vehicular activities.

However, no loss of lives were recorded, nor were any injuries sustained at the scene of the incident where the Agency's heavy-duty equipment compiling of the Crane, Lowbed and Super Metro were deployed for a speedy recovery of the articulated vehicle off the bridge, to enable free vehicular activities for all other road users.

LASEMA, LASTMA, FRSC and Police were responders at the Ijora under bridge accident scene.

LASEMA Kicks Off Sensitization and Advocacy on Flood Prevention In Lagos

As part of the Early Warning Mechanism of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to sensitize residents on safety, the Agency commenced Road Show on Sensitization and Advocacy on Flood Prevention.

The Director-General/CEO of the Agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, led the team to Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area, Ifako Ijaye Local Council Development Area, Ojodu Local Council Development Area, and Ikeja Local Government Area.

The Agency was also accompanied by other Stakeholders such the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Lagos State Neighborhood and Safety Corps, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, Rapid Response Squad of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Prison Service and the Red Cross Society of Nigeria.

Lagos State Government Releases Updated Lists of Emergency Numbers

In a bid to ensure openness, responsibility and also to put the workers on toes, the Lagos State Government has released a list of updated emergency numbers for all sectors across the state. These numbers cut across all sectors from the police to health, fire etc. We are being assured of adequate and prompt response from these sectors.

Road accidents: LASEMA warns against dangerous driving

The General Manager Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu has advised motorists to always drive safely by observing speed limits, obeying traffic signs and ensuring vigilance on the roads to avoid any unfortunate incident that may lead to unnecessary injuries and loss of lives on Lagos roads.

Tiamiyu gave the warning recently at Alausa, Ikeja following an accident that occurred during the early hours of Tuesday when an articulated gas truck rammed into another stationary articulated vehicle due to non-adherence to safety and road traffic rules by the motorists.

He explained that the Agency received a distress alert at about 7.09 a.m on Monday, 5th March via the emergency toll-free line 112/767 revealing the occurrence of an accident on the Oshodi/Apapa Express Way after Cele Bus Stop inward Mile 2

"The call prompted the immediate activation of the Agency's Response Team and other responders to the scene of the incident," he said.

"Preliminary investigation carried out on arrival at the scene of the incident revealed that the driver of the articulated Gas truck was overspeeding, lost control and rammed into a containerised truck parked by the side of the road. Officials of the LASEMA Response Team (LRT) were immediately mobilised to the scene to respond to the incident", he added.

The LASEMA boss revealed that though no life was lost in the accident, persons who were either trapped in the vehicle or sustained different degrees of injuries were rescued alive with the aid of the Agency's extrication equipment and given appropriate medical attention.

“The articulated trucks involved in the incident were immediately recovered with the help of the Agency's Supper Metro towing truck, to restore normalcy and free vehicular movement around the axis”, he stated.

While noting that the Agency's Response Team, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Nigeria Police from Okota Division all responded to the incident, he affirmed that the Police and other security operatives will carry out further investigations to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the unfortunate incident.

Lagos Opens New LASEMA Response Unit In Igando

The Lagos State Government has renewed its commitment to improving its response time towards effective management of emergency situations across the State with the establishment of a new Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit at Igando in Alimosho Local Government Area of the State.

The General Manager of LASEMA, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, speaking today in Ikeja, said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode approved the establishment of the Centre to cater for Lagosians residing around Ikotun, Idimu, Egbeda, LASU-Igando Road and the Badagry axis, while a plan for the establishment of another Unit, by the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education Ijanikin, is ongoing.

Tiamiyu explained that the decentralisation of emergency/disaster management by the present administration from one response Unit in Alausa to three Centres, namely: LASEMA Response Unit (LRU) Cappa Oshodi, LASEMA Response Unit, Lekki (by Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge) and LASEMA Response Unit, Onipanu on Ikorodu Road is aimed at improving response time to emergency interventions.

He reiterated that the establishment of these centers has yielded good results in form of an increase in the protection of lives and property; dramatic reduction in fatalities and injuries from emergency/disaster situations.

While noting that the ultimate aim of the State government is to sustain the response capability of the Agency towards building a more resilient Lagos Mega City, Tiamiyu disclosed that there is an ongoing plan to establish three more divisional (upgraded) Dispatch Centres by Temu Junction, Epe; Ijanikin by Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Badagry; LASPOTECH in Ikorodu and another LRU at Costain, Lagos Mainland.

He said the significance of these Centres is geared towards continued protection of community assets and cultural heritage, a safer environment as well as an increase in investment infrastructure, noting over the years there has been improved response time and proper coordination in the various emergency interventions by the Agency.

The LASEMA Boss also emphasized that the public sensitization and the surveillance activity by the Agency have drastically reduced major incidents in the State, saying that the State Government is alive to its responsibilities in entrenching safety of lives and property at all times.

Tiamiyu expressed his profound gratitude to Governor Ambode for providing adequate resources to the Agency and other security operatives in the State and implored Lagosians to call the emergency toll free numbers 112/767 in case of an emergency.

Several Injured, Many Trapped As Train Derails In Lagos - Photos & Video

According to Pulse Nigeria, A rickety passenger train veered off the tracks in the Agege, Mangoro area of Lagos in the early hours of Thursday, January 10, 2019, with casualty figures yet to be ascertained at the time of filing this story.

Social media users say traffic along the Ikeja-Along—Iyana Ipaja axis has come to a standstill during the rush hour regular commute.

According to reports, a coach or two have been photographed crashing off the track into the neighbourhood beside it, with initial reports suggesting that the derailment may have hit a few persons.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says an investigation showed that the train derailed as a result of faulty tracks.

According to Punch, the agency explained in a statement that the tracks had been reported by men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in the area and repair work on the damaged section of the rail was billed to commence later in the day.

Train derailment in Lagos, Nigeria’s economic nerve center, is quite common. On November 16, 2017, a train derailed around the Abattoir area of Agege, injuring many and leaving scores dead.

On July 20, 2018, a train rammed into a Danfo bus that had suddenly gotten in the way, killing at least nine persons.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, is bedeviled by crumbling transport infrastructure in inner cities and across states.

Prompt response from Lasema Response Unit saves a family of 5 and 4 others

If not for the prompt intervention by LASEMA Response Unit in a multiple accident along Ikorodu Road which led to the rescue of 9 lives including a family of five (father, mother and three girls and others), the family and all other occupants in these cars will have been dead by now. The accident was as a result of tanker falling on 2 cars thereby causing a serious damage. See more pictures below..
