An Overview of The Longest Canopy Walk in Africa - Photos and Video

Talk of the longest canopy walkway in Africa, then the Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC) comes to mind.

The place was built by the former Lagos State Governor administration, Mr. Babatunde Fashola and handed over to the Nigerian Conservation Foundation. Also commissioned was the Family Park with facilities.

The park was built by the Lagos State Government through its Ministry of Tourism and Inter-Governmental Relations, the 401 Meters Canopy Walk, and the Family Park which boasts of Koi and Tilapa Ponds, jungle gym, outdoor games etc are located within the nature reserve of the Lekki Conservation Centre in Lagos.

Canopy walks are also known as canopy walk-ways, treetop walk, treetop walk-ways or suspension bridges in some cases. They provide pedestrian access to forest canopy and give you a bird’s eye view of the forest. According to Wikipedia “Early walkways consisted of bridges between trees in the canopy of a forest; mostly linked up with platforms inside or around the trees.

They were originally intended as access to the upper regions of ancient forests for scientists conducting canopy research. However, today they serve as ecotourism attractions for visitors in forest reserves and conservation centers.

Not more than 6 people are allowed at a time on each level of the canopy walk. There are 7 levels and 6 resting bridges. There is also an age restriction, from 14-70 years. The canopy walk is best done in groups

Here are top 5 reasons why you may have to more for Lagos toll gates fees

This is a wake-up call to all Lagos residents to brace up for increment in toll gates across the state as from next week. Commuters who ply the Lekki-Ikoyi and Lekki-Epe expressways from February 1, 2018 will have to pay some additional fees according to the management of LCC.

According to the Managing Director of the Lekki Concession Company (LCC), Mohammed Hassan, the “current business realities and increasing cost of operation” means that the old rates will no longer apply.

The following are current rates at the Lekki toll gates:

Lekki - Epe toll gate

Cars--N120
Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs)--N150
Commercial buses--N80

Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge

Cars--N250
SUVs--N300
Commercial bus drivers aren’t allowed on the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge. The new rates are yet to be announced.

Here are five reasons why the old rates at the tolls will no longer apply from next week:

1. Stakeholders have approved the rate increase

According to Hassan, consultations with stakeholders on the proposed hike, went particularly well.
“Following extensive consultations held with stakeholders in the Eti-Osa/Lekki-Epe Expressway of Lagos State, the Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC), has announced a review in toll tariffs at the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Toll Plaza with effect from Thursday, February 1, 2018,” Hassan said.

2. There has been no increase in toll fares since the gates were born

“Since the commencement of tolling in December 2011, the toll tariffs had remained the same despite the continuous increase in the cost of operations to ensure that the toll plazas and the road infrastructure are well maintained”, Hassan said.

 3. Hike is necessary so that LCC can pay off debts

In Hassan’s words: “The toll review has also become necessary to enable the company meet its loan obligations to its local and foreign lenders”.

4. The economic climate in Nigeria has become very tough

“The toll fare increase is as a result of current economic and business realities that have adversely increased the cost of operations and maintenance of the company’s loan obligations”, Hassan added.

5. Forex has shot up since 2011

“Foreign exchange rates have continued to increase astronomically in the last couple of years. LCC cannot continue to operate or provide the services required from us if we do not review the toll tariffs”, Hassan said.
____
The plan to hike toll fares was made public in November of 2017. However, the Lagos State government asked LCC to temporarily shelve the move.

Lagos State directs LCC to halt toll-gate tariff hike

It was earlier reported yesterday that the Lekki Concession Company plans to hike its fees as from next week and this has generated a lot of outburst from the public. The Lagos State has swung into action by halting the plans as it released this press release..

The attention of Lagos State Government has been drawn to the announcement of a proposed tariff hike on Lekki-Epe Expressway and Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge by the Lekki Concession Company (LCC).

The Lagos State government hereby informs the general public that the said tariff hike has now been put on hold as the necessary consultations with stakeholders are yet to be concluded.
While government recognises the need for periodic review of tariffs and any other levies appertaining to road infrastructure maintenance in the state, the public and critical stakeholders as the ultimate beneficiaries of such facilities must always be carried along at all times.
Therefore, the proposed tarrif hike cannot be effected at this period in the interest of the public, while further consultations continue.
