RRS Rescued Bus Driver Who Got Sick While On Motion On 3rd Mainland Bridge - Photos

If not for the timely intervention of the RRS team on 3rd Mainland Bridge in Lagos, its either the driver of this dies without medical aid or the passengers got stranded and got robbed on the highway.

According to a tweet by the RRS, RRS officers on patrol intercepted this vehicle parked on 3rd Mainland Bridge causing traffic. They discovered the driver who was en route the South-East region, got ill in motion and parked the vehicle. We have contacted the management of his company and an ambulance.

A closer look at the driver might suggest he got drowsy on the steel, kudos has to be given to the driver who deemed it wise to park and stop the journey, other drivers may risk it and decided to drive in that state despite not feeling too well.

The RRS squad has once again proved themselves as a model to be studied by the Nigerian Police. The RRS is the Lagos Security arm and they are Rapid Response Squad. Part of their duty is ensuring the security of lives and properties especially on the highway, they ply the popular 3rd Mainland Bridge to wade off criminals who have turned the place as their second home.

According to reports, RRS officers assisting this motorist whose vehicle ran out of petrol on the highway. We assisted him with a few liters to enable him to get to the nearest petrol station. Truly, these are the good guys.

As the election is here, all vehicular movement has been suspended, shops close, road blocked, a Nigerian drone/photographer Just Debola decided to see how 3rd mainland looks like without cars since there is a restriction of vehicular movement because of the elections.

3rd mainland bridge is notorious for traffic and is always busy no matter the time you pass there, there will always be a vehicular activity on the bridge.

Third Mainland Bridge is the longest of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, the other are the Eko and Carter bridges. It was the longest bridge in Africa until 1996 when the 6th October Bridge located in Cairo was completed. The bridge starts from Oworonshoki which is linked to the Apapa-Oshodi express way and Lagos-Ibadan express way, and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island. There is also a link midway through the bridge that leads to Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba. The bridge was built by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC and opened by President Ibrahim Babangida in 1990; it measures about 11.8 km in length.

The Third Mainland Bridge has very high vehicular traffic on weekdays, as many residents commute to and from the Lagos Mainland to the Island which is the commercial hub of Lagos State. Residents in Ikeja, Agboyi-Ketu, Ikorodu, Isheri, Oworonshoki, Gbagada, Yaba, Maryland and Oshodi. The Third Mainland Bridge is an essential part of Lagos' daily commuting, and as such requires to be constantly renovated. It has also come to be a major Lagos icon, offering different views of Lagos - the Lagos Lagoon, the University of Lagos Waterfront and Makoko, a shanty town built on the Lagos Lagoon.

It is no news that the 3rd Mainland Bridge has been shut. The bridge was shut to analyze and also to do some Investigative Maintenance Test on the bridge. The 28-year-old bridge is the busiest bridge for road users in the country as it links several roads from the Island to the Mainland. Due to the closure of the bridge, Lagos traffic was never the same again as virtually all roads are blocked. From Lekki to Yaba, Island, everywhere was bumper to bumper.

3rd Mainland Bridge: Roads That Are Likely To Be Congested

It is no news that the 3rd Mainland Bridge in Lagos will be shut for vehicular movements for 4 days from 12 am 24th August 2018. Lagos is a cosmopolitan city with traffic issues, with traffic issues from trailers, and tankers to cope, traffic in Lagos has been a pain to every motorist. The closure of 3rd Mainland Bridge will have an adverse effect on Lagos roads. The Lagos State Government with all security agencies has advised road users to use other road alternatives like Carter Bridge also known as Eko Bridge, Ikorodu Road among others.

AutoReportNG went to town before the closure of the 3rd Mainland Bridge to access the level of traffic and how the city can fare during these 4 days, during our assessment, we noticed some areas that may be traffic prone for users in these four days.

1. Ikorodu Road

Except a miracle happens midnight and all the tankers and trailers within these roads are relocated, Ikorodu Road may be the worst place to be. With trailers all over the road, they have not only constituted a nuisance to the road, they have divided the road into two, they took the other part of the road while vehicles took the other lane. Now that the 3rd Mainland Bridge will be closed, this road will be heavily packed as this road leads to major road outlets like Ketu, Ojota, Ikeja and those going outside Lagos.

2. Eko Bridge

Eko Bridge will be the best alternative for those who are coming from Island and want to link to the mainland, however, Eko Bridge seems to be faced with three issues, one is traders selling within this area. Traders in Idumota, Balogun, Oke-Arin, Isale Eko block the roads when they are selling, a visit to Idumota during the day will reveal the situation of things to you even with the presence of CBD and LASTMA officials, they seem uncontrollable, also is the case of the danfos that turn the road to their park, going towards Eyin Eyo when climbing the bridge is usually hectic especially areas like Tom Jones, Adeniji among others, except if the LASTMA decided to do a total overhaul of that road, another one aspect to be worried about are the trailers and tankers. The trailers and tankers have taken over roads from Iddo, Ijora Olopa up to Ijora 7up and then to the bridge linking Apapa. With these two issues, they can maneuver from Ijora Olopa to link Costain bridge.

3. Oshodi-Apapa Expressway

This road can best be described as the mother of all traffic in Lagos all thanks to the port, trailers, and tankers in this route. The Oshodi-Apapa Expressway has become practically unmotorable due to the trailers on the road, with the closure of the bridge, this road will be in total mess except for something fast is done on time.

Other roads which may likely be jampacked include, Yaba, Bariga Road, Obalende.

The good thing is that LASTMA, FRSC, RRS and some other security agencies will be on the road to help direct and maintain orderliness on the road.

Advice
Since we all know the road will be blocked, now is the time to encourage our car owners to pack the cars at home and use the Bus Rapid Transit, BRT as this will help to reduce the number of cars on the road.

3rd Mainland Bridge for temporary closure from August 23

The Lagos State Government has said that the Third Mainland Bridge will be temporarily closed for four days starting from midnight of August 23 to midnight of August 26, 2018, in order to carry out Investigative Maintenance Test on the bridge.

The State’s Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Ade Akinsanya, who disclosed this in a statement at the weekend, said the decision was taken after due consultation with the Federal Ministry of Power, Works, and Housing.

The four-day closure, according to Akinsanya, will enable the contractors to assess the true state of the bridge after which works would commence by the end of the year or early in 2019.

Recall that the Federal Government had earlier announced plans to shut the bridge in July, but had to shelve the decision after due consultation with the State Government and wide deliberations with other stakeholders who expressed concern about the indiscriminate parking of articulated vehicles on other alternative routes which would have adversely affected traffic.

Subsequently, a Joint Task Force set up to remove the articulated vehicles from the highways was able to achieve tremendous success.

Justifying the need for the closure, Akinsanya said: “The 3rd Mainland Bridge which was opened about 30 years ago by the then military government has had haphazard maintenance and repairs in the past which the present Federal Government is committed to correct by carrying out proper and continuous maintenance and repairs on it.”

Consequently, the State Government appealed for the cooperation, support, and understanding of all motorists and residents, advising them to minimize non-essential travel and movements during the four-day closure.

Besides, Akinsanya said all traffic management agencies including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Police, among others, have been mandated to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted flow of traffic on all the other alternative roads and traffic corridors across the metropolis during the closure.

Accident Throws Man's Leg into Lagoon

An Accident between a red Toyota and a Danfo bus on Third Mainland Bridge this morning has thrown a passenger leg into the Lagoon.

The victim, a passenger in the Danfo bus was seating in the front when the incident happened.

His limb was reported to have been entangled within crash barriers on the.bridge before eventually falling into the lagoon.

RRS riders and monitors at the scene subsequently called for emergency unit to help recover the missing leg.

Recovery effort by the Marine Police and a team of RRS officials is in progress while the man has been moved to Gbagada General Hospital, Lagos.

The vehicles have been moved by LASEMA Response Unit to avoid congestion.
